The enhanced
Dictionary of Occupational Titles (eDOT) is a useful resource with
over 15,000 ready-made position descriptions. We’ll show you how to use the
Career Interest edition of this software now. Problem Statement Janet is a human
resource manager for Fancy Hotels, Inc. — a chain of first-class hotels
located in most major U.S. cities. Janet is trying to answer a question that
often comes up for the hotel restaurants: What’s the distinction between a cook and a chef? The hotel chain
doesn’t have clear-cut position descriptions that make the distinction
evident, and employees carry both titles. It seems that cooks become chefs
when they’ve been employed for a sufficient period of time within the
hotel chain, and when their salaries have gone beyond the normal range for
cooks. Janet would like to
establish a less ambiguous distinction between these two positions. She
turns to the enhanced Dictionary of Occupational Titles to
research the matter. Please click on the Load Step-by-Step button to
follow along with Janet’s investigation. Career Interest
Edition eDOT opens with a disclaimer. Please review it, then select the circle next to “I have
read and understand the disclaimer” and click on the OK
button. When running eDOT for the first time, a screen titled ‘Submit New Data’ will appear to let you input position data from your organization for use in future eDOT editions. (You can access this option at any time from the eDOT Internet menu.) To skip this screen, click on the Cancel button in the lower right-hand corner. The first thing Janet needs
to do is select which edition of eDOT to run. Here’s how:
