This tutorial will show you how to use the Transferable Skills edition of the eDOT software. You'll learn how to:
  1. Quickly write and edit job descriptions.
  2. Create a job history.
  3. Review the crosswalk of position titles and codes for multiple classification systems.
  4. Use predefined filters and create a brand-new filter to explore alternate jobs based on interest, job titles, or skills/attributes.
  5. Review job availability and potential employers in a selected location and industry.

Problem Statement

You are the Vocational Rehabilitation specialist for VocExperts, Inc. Your newest client, Ken Burnham, was a Computer Operations Programmer when he was injured on the job. You need to find him alternate jobs for retraining and/or job placement.

Because the entire high-tech industry in his area of Chicago is depressed, you hope to find him alternate jobs in other industries.

How to Begin

First you’ll open up the enhanced Dictionary of Occupational Titles. (From now on we’ll refer to it by its abbreviation, eDOT).

eDOT opens with a disclaimer. Please review it, then select the circle next to “I have read and understand the disclaimer” and click on the OK button.

When running eDOT for the first time, a screen titled ‘Submit New Data’ will appear to let you input position data from your organization for incorporation in future quarterly releases of the eDOT sostware. (You can access this option at any time from the eDOT Internet menu.) To skip this screen, click on the Cancel button at the lower right-hand corner.

The first thing we need to do is select which eDOT edition to run.

Here’s how to select an eDOT edition…

Step 1: Click on the Edition menu at the top of the eDOT screen.
Step 2: A drop-down menu will appear. Click on Transferable Skills.

Since we are conducting an analysis for an injured worker, this is the most appropriate edition. The caption bar at the top of the eDOT screen will change to say “Transferable Skills Edition,” letting you know that this edition is active.

To see a demonstration of this, please click on the image above.
